Eskom Expo For Young Scientists

Burgies takes the lead at 2021’s Eskom Expo Science Fair

This year marked the second year the annual Eskom Expo Science Fair competition was hosted online due to COVID-19 restrictions. Three of our learners participated in the provincial competition and held our school’s name high. Here are their achievements and an overview of their projects:

  • Inge Roux, Grade 11: Received a bronze medal for her project ‘For the Love of Soil!’ Inge wanted to find out which methods can be used to prevent or minimize soil erosion. She then came up with the brilliant idea to use vegetables to stabilize the soil and therefor minimize the possibility of soil erosion. She also brought in the element of creating jobs.

  • Victoria Bruwer, Grade 11: Received a silver medal for her project ‘The Dream of the Hour’. She was also selected to represent the Western Cape at the International Science Fair competition where she received a bronze medal. Victoria’s project was a social sciences project, for which she used Google Forms questionnaires to determine whether there is a correlation between one’s personality and one’s ability to remember dreams.

  • Thiedu du Preez, Grade 8: Received a silver medal for his project “White, Whiter, Green!’. He was also selected to represent the Western Cape at the International Science Fair competition where he received a gold medal along with the title as best junior project in Chemistry and Biochemistry. His project was about the use of natural products to clean tough stains as an alternative to the laundry detergents and stain removers one buys in the store - which can be potentially harmful to the environment and one’s health.
